Speech Language Pathologist Assistant

As a Speech Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) you will be performing tasks that may include speech-language screenings, implementation of ongoing treatment and therapy plans, documentation of client progress, and assisting the SLP during assessment and treatment. SLPAs may also assist in research projects and in maintenance of materials and equipment used during therapy. The SLPA assists with the continuous improvement of total quality care as it relates to speech therapy services under the direction and supervision of a qualified Speech Language Pathologist.

Ø      Duties

 

1.  Record case history information.

2.  Screen speech, language or hearing by the use of procedures that are included in published material containing directions for administration and scoring.

3.  Implement, without diagnostic interpretation, evaluative procedures that are:

            a. Planned and designed by the Speech Language Pathologist, and

            b. Included in published materials which have directions for administration and scoring.

4.  Implement treatment programs that:

            a. Are planned and designed by the Speech Language Pathologist to meet pre-established goals, and

            b. Contain pre-established criteria for mastery.

5.  Record, chart, graph or otherwise display data relative to client performance.

6.  Perform clerical functions necessary to maintain clinical records.

7.  Report changes in client performance to the licensee having responsibility for that client.

8.  Prepare clinical materials.

9.  Test equipment to determine if the equipment is performing according to published specifications.

10. Participate with the licensee in research projects, in-service training, public relations programs, or similar activities as planned, designed and directed by the licensee.

11. Serve as an interpreter (translator) for the speech-language pathology licensee during clinical procedures.

12. Assist in the evaluation or treatment of difficult-to-test clients.

 

Ø      Requirements

 

1.  Must be able to obtain a Florida Department of Health Certificate which includes having:

            a. A bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a regional association of colleges and schools recognized by the Department of Education which includes at least twenty-four (24) semester hours of course work earned at an accredited college or university, including:

                        i. Nine (9) semester hours in courses that provide fundamental information applicable to normal human growth and development, psychology, and normal development and use of speech, hearing and language.

                        ii. Fifteen (15) semester hours in courses that provide information about and observation of speech, hearing, language disorders, general phonetics, basic articulation, screening and therapy, basic audiometry, or auditory training.

            b. One (1) hour HIV/AIDS course

            c. Two (2) hours in Prevention of Medical Errors course

2.  Clean Driving History.

3.  Background check and drug screening.

4.  Occasional lifting, walking, standing, bending, stooping and sitting for extended periods.

5.  Full use of gross and fine motor skills of the upper and lower extremities.

6.  Ability to communicate effectively in both writing and verbal arenas as well as via email.

7.  Ability to use insight when utilizing applicable tests and equipment.

8.  Successful completion of CPR course.
